Kershaw Takes Double Win
Sundays race was run in lovely sunny conditions with Kelly again on Pole from
Kershaw, Horan and Mcauley. It nearly turned into a marathon and ran for 15
laps leaving some drivers to wonder would their fuel last the whole race.
Adam Mcauley never made it to the grid with an ignition problem
Kelly and Kershaw were away at the front but the best start went to Robbie
Allen from row three who jumped Mark Horan to find himself up to 3rd place. Robert Casey near stalled on the grid when a float broke and was lucky not to be hit as the field passed him.
Lloyd Murphy lost his nose as he rounded the banked corner on the opening
lap. Dan Polley passed Horan on lap 2 and then moved himself up to 3rd by
passing Allen at the top of the hill a lap later. Dave O Brien made a few
places early on but was too late on the brakes at Rocket and dropped back on
lap four.
Kershaw started to pull away once he hit the front while the trio of Kelly,
Polley, and Allen raced together. Allen was able to get the drive on Polley
and pass him when they reached the top of the hill on lap five. There was a
gap to Horan, then a further gap to Murphy. Willie Callaghan headed a group
further back that included Mick Sammon, Roy Hanlon and Roy Tobin. Sammon was
the top B runner after the weekend's demise of Furlong and Mcauley. Murphy in
6th place was the best placed novice while behind the Callaghan group Morgan
McCourt had a good advantage over Noel Cooley and Javier Pernas. These pair
were racing with John Downey and Philip Lawless.
Allen was doing his best to
move up a place but Kelly was able to resist every move, he came closest on
lap eight but couldn't pass the Champion at Rocket. Polley tracked the pair, while Horan and Murphy were driving lonely races further back.
Most of the action in the latter stages of the race was at the back of the
field. McCourt seemed to lose pace and started to be caught by Cooley and
Pernas who could sense more points for their campaign. Cooley was passed by
the Spaniard who then set his sights on McCourt. He was able to this with a
couple of laps to spare but didn't make his efforts stick until the last lap.
Allen had one more big effort to pass Kelly and he was successful, he got a
great tow off Kelly out of the Banking and was in front by Rocket. Kelly
wasn't to be outdone though and reclaimed the place a lap later, which was
the last lap.
There was no denying Kershaw though. He finished the weekend with two race
wins and two fastest laps. He was the first person this season to secure more
than one win. "I feel like a bus" the winner declared afterwards. "I wait all
season for a win and then I get a pair together. It should be a great fight
for the title over the coming months"
The weekends double win leaves Kershaw a single point behind Champion Kelly
in the FDS Worldwide Express Formula VEE National Championship. Adam Mcauley has taken over the lead in the B
Championship, with Mick Sammon also overtaking long time leader Jimmy
Furlong. Noel Cooley is still to the front in The SuperValu & Centra Formula VEE Novice Championship from MOrgan McCourt and Jarier Pernas as the VEE's head
for Kirkistown in three weeks time.
