Kelly win takes him to Championship lead
Trevor Delaney started from pole in the latest round of the FDS Worldwide Express Formula VEE National Championship at Mondello Park but a poor getaway allowed Brian Kelly to grab an early lead. Robbie Allen passed Willie Callaghan off the line also and the front three were quick to pull themselves a gap early on. Delaneys car was poor early on but once it settled he was seriously able to challenge Kelly. Allen stayed with the pair.
Callaghan fell away but led the chasing group with Stephen Kershaw. Leader Kelly was under serious pressure from Delaney lap after lap with the pair banging wheels several times. The pace at the front slowed as a consequence, and the group of Callaghan was able to close up meaning as the race headed into the closing stages the leading train was now more than ten cars.
The race ended early on lap nine. Callaghan and Kershaw came together at Autopoint corner. Kershaw spun but was able to continue but Callaghan rolled his car up the escape road landing upside down. The red flag was thrown to end the race and allow the marshals safely extract Callaghan from his wrecked car. He was unhurt in the incident.
Kelly was declared the winner from Delaney and Allen. The win took the champion back to the lead of the championship ahead of Dan Polley as the VEE’s head for a double header at Anglesey in July
