Heavey Takes First Win
Dave Heavey was the latest winner in the FDS Worldwide Express Formula VEE National Championship at Mondello Park as the class showed just how tight the racing is this year.
Jimmy Furlong took pole position in monsoon type conditions from Adam Mcauley, and Willie Callaghan but the track had dried before the race and it was Mcauley who was away best to lead on the opening lap. Furlong lost further places when he went off avoiding Trevor Delaney at the Tarzans corner; Dave Heavey passed Callaghan as the leading bunch scattered to avoid the incident.
Mcauley led for two laps with Heavey and Callaghan in tow. The pressure by Heavey finally paid off on lap four when he got better drive than Mcauley on the straight and displaced the leader at Honda corner. The front pair then pulled a gap from Callaghan who was kept busy defending from Robbie Allen and Dan Polley. Delaney caught this group near the end of the race but was only able to squeeze past Polley on the last lap.
Kildare native Heavey held on for his first ever win and the 2nd in a row for the Clondalkin based KERS Motorsport Team. Mcauley was a close second well ahead of Callaghan. The lead in the Championship changed with Dan Polley now out in front. The VEE’s will be back at Mondello Park in four weeks time.
