Kirkistown, 28th August 2010
Ray Moore took a big step towards the title with another win in the latest round of the Pony Express Formula VEE National Championship at Kirkistown.
Moore stated the race from pole ahead of Dan Polley, Robbie Allen, Dave O’Brien, Paul Heavey and Robert Casey. Polley had the best start and led away from Moore and Allen. Casey passed Heavey off the line and was soon putting O’Brien under pressure, passing him before the end of the lap. Moore was quick and soon back in the lead. He got better drive out of the hairpin and was in front of Polley by Colonial. The pair then started to pull away from the rest. Casey caught Allen and the pair swapped places a couple of times but Casey went off after a few laps and lost a lot of places.
Heavey led the chasers that included O’Brien, heat winner Adam Macauley, Roy Hanlon and Joe Smith. Jimmy Furlong had started well down but soon caught this group. He was working his way through them when he came together with O’Brien at Fishermans leading to both cars retiring. Moore’s lead was cut after the incident when he thought the doctor’s car was the safety car and slowed up. He was soon back on his blistering pace with Polley on tow. There was a long gap to Allen with a similar gap to the Heavey group.
Casey was doing a great job of keeping his title hopes alive. He charged back through the field and caught the Heavey group with a couple of laps to go and made short work of passing them all. Smith followed him through as far as Heavey and picked up a few places.
Moore held on for the win and broke the lap record in the process. Polley and Allen held their positions until the end while Casey recovered to finish 4th in the end. Moore has extended his lead over Casey and Polley who are tied together with only two races left.
