Anglesey, 3th July 2010
Dan Polley had a perfect day at Anglesey on Saturday to win the latest round in the Pony Express Formula VEE National Championship. He took pole, won the race and set a new lap record along the way to move himself back into contention for the title race.
Polley started the race on pole from Ray Moore, Jimmy Furlong, Robbie Allen, Adam Macaulay, and Robert Casey but it was Moore who had the best start and jumped into the lead. Casey and Lloyd Murphy from further back also made places at the start. Paul Heavey starting at the back had the best opening lap moving himself into the midfield. Polley retook the lead on lap two passing Moore on the run up to Rocket. Casey had made his way up to 3rd by this stage followed by Allen, O’Brien and Brian Kelly, Murphy and Macaulay.
The leading bunch was reduced after Murphy and Dave O’Brien came together on lap three. Polley still led from Moore, Casey, Allen and Furlong. Murphy and Macauley were just back with Kelly catching them. Casey then grabbed the lead with a great run up the hill at pass Polley at Rocket but a carbon copy move a lap later saw the places reversed. Polley then started to pull away. Moore and Allen tracked Casey with Allen eventually passing Moore mid-race. Furlong, Murphy and Macaulay had fallen away but were still racing themselves. Furlong retired as the race reached the closing stages.
The track became fairly slippery towards the end and the pace fell as a result. Polley had a safe margin to keep his lead. Casey and Allen battled between themselves with casey keeping his advantage but Moore was in trouble, Murphy was much faster on this type of surface and reeled him in before overtaking at the bottom of the corkscrew in a daring move just before the chequered flag to claim 4th overall. It was the 2nd win of the season for Polley, while Allen in 3rd recorded his best result so far this year.
