Mondello Park, 13th June 2010
Trevor Delaney was the winner of the latest round in the Pony Express Formula
VEE National Championship at Mondello Park on Sunday from series leader Ray
Moore and Robert Casey. Brain Kelly snatched the pole at the last minute in
qualifying from Robbie Allen. Robert Casey, Trevor Delaney, Ray Moore and
Jimmy Furlong, Dan Polley and Lloyd Murphy followed them on the grid. Adam
Macauley won the heat from Dave O'Brien to secure their grid slots.
Kelly held Allen at the start but the fast starting Delaney passed Casey
while Polley passed Furlong. There were no casualties on the opening lap
despite the damp track to leave the order as Kelly, Allen, Delaney, Casey,
Moore and Polley. Moore started to fall away from the leading four as he
appeared to struggle for pace. Javier Pernas had made several places on the
opening lap but went off at Honda on lap three. He had just had a tangle at Dunlop with Damien Murphy while trying to pass him. The marshals tried to clear the car under yellows but the safety car
had to be deployed on lap four bringing the entire field back together. It stayed out for two laps.
The restart saw business as usual at the front. Kelly still held off Allen
but Moore managed to pass Casey. Allen was trying to pressure the leader
into making a mistake but Delaney now started to attack. All three wanted to
lead but it was Kelly who stayed at the front. Moore and Casey matched the
pace of the leading trio. Polley started to fall back slightly. Lloyd Murphy
retired when the spring on his carb broke and he ended up in the gravel trap
of the Esses.
The frantic pace at the front and attempted overtaking at every corner was
brilliant to watch but it didn't last. The front three tried to round Honda
together, which never really works. Allen on the outside was pushed onto the
wet grass; unable to stop he hit Kelly at the Boac launching the leader into
a multiple roll, and out of the race. Delaney and Moore both swerved to the
inside and took over at the front with Delaney leading. Casey, Polley and
Furlong missed the incident and passed Allen on the run to turn three. Polley
passed Furlong too before the end of the lap.
Delaney was quick to pull a gap on Moore; he then concentrated on maintaining
it over the closing laps, which he did to take his first win of the season.
Casey matched Moore's pace and the pair filled the podium. Polley, Furlong
and Allen followed the leaders
Moore still leads the title race with Delaney the challenger while Casey is
only a single point further adrift.
