Kirkistown, 29th May 2010
Ray Moore led all the way to win the latest round of the Pony Express Formula
VEE National Championship at Kirkistown on Saturday to regain the lead in the
title race.
Moore started on pole from Brian Kelly, Trevor Delaney, Robert Casey, Willie
Callaghan, Dave Heavey , Jimmy Furlong, and Robbie Allen. Dan Polley had
earlier won the heat from Roy Hanlon to secure their grid slots.
Moore got the jump off the line and led into Colonial but Kelly missed a gear
and the error dropped him well back. Heavey made the best start and passed
several cars to lie 2nd overall. He went side by side with Delaney down the
back straight, however Delaney got ahead at the hairpin only to see the pair
come together. Heavey hit the back of him and lost his nose. Delaney lost
places. Casey and Heavey were now the challengers, and they engaged Moore in
a classic slipstreaming battle for a few laps. Moore was never headed but the
three cars were side by side several times. Heavey and Casey eventually
tangled at Colonial knocking both drivers out of the race.
This promoted Robbie Allen to 2nd with Kelly and Delaney chasing him down
after their earlier problems. Allen's challenge didn't last though as the
pair had just caught him when he pulled out of the race with an engine
problem. Moore still maintained his lead as the race went into the 2nd half.
Delaney had passed Kelly, while a chasing bunch of Dave O'Brien, Roy Hanlon
and Damien Murphy weren't too far behind. Ger Callaghan and Adam Macauley
joined them as the race progressed.
The safety car wiped out Moore's lead on lap nine. There was a melee at the
hairpin two laps earlier that caused carnage. Lloyd Muphy was tipped from
behind, launched into the air, and landed on Morgan McCourt's car. Dave Kelly
cut to the inside to avoid the pair while Gavin Barr went to the outside.
Philip Devlin couldn't stop in time and hit the spinning pair as they crossed
the track. Only McCourt and Murphy were out of the race. The marshals tried
to move McCourts car under yellows but without success. The wrecker had the
Moore held his nerve on the restart and kept Delaney behind. Kelly was coming
under pressure from O'Brien but held his position. The leaders made it safely
through Colonial but the restart wasn't without incident. Philip Devlin
managed to hit his kill switch and knock off the engine, Gavin Barr following
had nowhere to go and ran over the back of him. Barr drove on but Devlins car
was blocking the track. The red flag was deployed and the race stopped.
Moore was declared the winner on 10 laps from Delaney and Kelly.
