Kirkistown, 24th April 2010
Ray Moore won round two of the Pony Express Formula VEE National Championship at Kirkistown on Saturday having been pushed all the way by Robert Casey. The former Champion now takes over the lead of the title race after two races.
Moore started on pole from Casey, O Brien, Kershaw, Polley, and Kelly made up the following rows. Kelly had a terrible start as everyone else got away cleanly. Moore defended from Casey at Colonial to keep his advantage. The leading six pulled away on the back straight Moore leading the way from Casey, O Brien, Polley who had passed Kershaw, and Macauley.
McCourt who had earlier won the head was at the front of the chasing bunch with Ger Byrne tucked under his gearbox. The group was more like a posse as behind Byrne the Donegal Mafia were in convoy. Willie Callaghan led the way from Kelly, Brother Ger, and Allen who was having a bad day.
Kershaw exited the race at the chicane on lap two and the leading group was down to four a couple of laps later when O Brien retired. Moore meanwhile was plugging away at the front. Casey was making every effort to grab the lead only to be outfoxed each time. Polley and Macauley were waiting to see would the leading duo slip up. McCourt was still taking the pressure back the road. Byrne had headed him briefly twice but was never past. The chasing bunch still contained eleven cars with tight wheel-to-wheel action. Kelly was now nearer to the front.
Allen spun exiting the hairpin on lap eight and the safety car was deployed. The front four got a breather for a couple of laps. Allen got going again. Moore was away at the restart. Casey hadn’t long left to try for the win, but he was giving it every effort. Polley and Macauley tracked the leaders. McCourt was caught out and was a long way back at the restart. He was further punished when Kelly , and Callaghan passed him at Colonial. Kelly spun at the hairpin though and was unable to continue.
Moore held off Casey to take the win while Polley was third. Macauley dropped back on the last lap but was safe in 4th. Wilie Callaghan followed, and Ger Byrne passed McCourt on the run to the line but was later penalised one place for an infringement.
The action returns at Mondello Park in a few weeks time.
