Mondello Park, 4th April 2010
Robert Casey took the first pole of the year with an impressive gap of
6/10ths of a second from Dan Polley. Brian Kelly, and Robbie Allen followed
while Trevor Delaney had to win the heat to secure his grid slot ahead of Ray
Moore, Stephen Kershaw, and Dave O'Brien.
Polley had a good start and was alongside Casey as they arrived at Honda but
was on the outside and lost out as Casey held on. Delaney lost places with a
problem on the run to the country. Polley and Allen came together in the
Esses, the pair clipped wheels and headed for the gravel. Allen found himself
beached but Polley escaped although he lost a lot of places. Casey led
through the early laps as Kelly slowly reeled him in. The pair had a good
break to the chasing bunch headed by Moore.
The chasing bunch grew smaller as Moore and O'Brien pulled away but Kershaw
was determined to keep with them. He dragged himself, Lloyd Murphy and Adam
Macauley back to the Moore group after a couple of laps. Delaney was now
starting to recover from his opening lap problems. He headed a bunch that
included Jimmy Furlong, Roy Hanlon, and Oisin Bergin and they were making
inroads on the leaders.
Oil changed the race on lap ten. The leaders were the first to come across
it, and it proved costly to Casey. He spun on the oil as he exited Honda.
Kelly had nowhere to go and clipped him. Moore had caught the pair at this
stage, and he swerved to avoid the pair. This left O'Brien following to sweep
around all three and into the lead. Moore passed the slower Kelly as he
recovered but before the end of the lap Kelly regained the place.
Victims of the oil at Honda included Roy Hanlon and Dave Kelly none were terminal
though until Naill McGahon arrived on scene a lap later. Gordon Hanlon and
Morgan McCourt has spun and blocked the track. McGahon stopped the car and
allowed the pair time to recover but his engine stalled. The car would not
start for him despite his best efforts. The leaders were now exiting Dunlop
and officials had no choice but to throw the red flag on safety grounds.
O'Brien had led for a lap and a half and was declared the winner from Kelly
and Moore. Casey managed to get himself back to 4th by the flag. Last years
rookie champion Murphy and Macauley rounded out the top six.
